GROUP B ATMOSPHERES

The National Electrical Code® (NEC) defines a Class I hazardous location as any location where flammable gases or vapors are or could be present. Certain flammable or combustible gases, primarily hydrogen, are classified as Group B.* The highly volatile nature of Group B hydrogen demands specialized equipment that can withstand explosive pressures and prevent the spread of flames that can ignite the surrounding atmosphere.

Innovative design and uncompromising quality have long been associated with Appleton products for both hazardous and non-hazardous locations. Nowhere are these qualities more critical, however, than in components for Group B hydrogen atmospheres. Appleton Group B products are designed with extra-thick walls, precision-machined mating surfaces, extra bolts, increased thread counts and premium-grade, high-strength metals. The result is an extra margin of safety and durability, and reliability proven over decades of use in petroleum, pulp and paper, and chemical plants throughout the world.
